 The Law Commission review has not lived up to its promise, despite some good recommendations. Approval of medicinal cannabis is very welcome, and would bring us into line with many other countries and 14 of the United States of America. But the really big problem is prohibition, and the Law Commission has not done what it said it would do – start from first principles. It says we should keep using the same old, unjust, controls that don’t work. A regulated, taxable cannabis market is needed to replace the evils of the uncontrolled, criminal market in cannabis and other drugs. So: what can we do about it?

An Auckland District Court Judge has acknowledged that cannabis law
reformers have "powerful ammunition" in their campaign to end cannabis
prohibition in New Zealand.
"NORML believes the continued persecution of cannabis users in New
Zealand is in breach of the Bill of Rights Act", said NORML NZ President
Phil Saxby today, "which is why Dakta Green, one of our Executive Board
members, made application for a stay of proceedings on Bill of Rights
issues".
Despite denying the application, Judge Anne Kiernan last week described
evidence presented to the court by Dakta Green as "powerful ammunition"
for persuading parliament to reform laws relating to cannabis.

Local marijuana law reform advocates are urging a boycott of Kellogg Co., for cutting ties with Olympic champion Michael Phelps after he was photographed with a bong.
NORML New Zealand said it is not Michael Phelps who should be castigated, but rather it's the absurd and hypocritical laws that criminalise the behaviour of Phelps and tens of millions of other successful and productive people like him that is worthy of condemnation.

item and thought “Wow! That was really good”? If so then you could help in the fight to end cannabis
prohibition by writing a Letter to The Editor (LTE). JASON BAKER-SHERMAN explains that if you have
an opinion, writing a letter could be much easier than you think.

Marijuana law reform activists around the world will protest this Saturday 10th September against the US Government's moves to extradite Canadian Marijuana Party leader Marc Emery, and are seeking an assurance from the New Zealand Government that it would not export our local pot growers - or law reform activists - to languish in American jails.

Canadian activist and cannabis seed producer Marc Emery and two co-workers were arrested on 29 July by their own government upon the request of the US Drugs Enforcement Administration (DEA). He now runs the risk of being extradited to the USA where he may get life in jail or even the death penalty for selling cannabis seeds to US citizens over the Internet.
It is important that we all protest against this dangerous escalation of the War on Drug Users. If the US succeeds in imposing its will on Canada, New Zealand could be next!
NORML is organising protests at the Canadian Consulate in Auckland, and Cashell Mall in Christchurch, on Saturday 10 September 2005. Join us there!

Following the unjust sentencing of Shapelle Corby to 20 years imprisonment for being caught allegedly importing 4kg of marijuana into Indonesia, NORML New Zealand support promoting the boycott of any goods and/or services profiting Indonesia.
Just talking about it is a waste of time.
Everybody get active. Publicise the following:
BOYCOTT ALL INDONESIAN GOODS AND SERVICES.
OFFER ALTERNATIVE SOURCES.
Organise ALTERNATIVE HOLIDAYS elsewhere at a COMPETITIVE or better prices.
Anything less will be ineffective.
Remember, In God (Allah) we believe, but the dollar is supreme!

 NORML now has an awesome Bedford CannaBus to tour the country in this election year, and we need YOUR help to get it on the road.
We don't have to pay for the bus just yet, but we do need to complete some minor repairs, get it painted and signwritten, and fit it out with campaigning kit. We estimate NORML will need to raise at least $13,000 to purchase, repair and fit out the bus - plus running costs.
Don't be shocked at the photo here, which shows the bus in "mid-repair" with lots of bits taken off for sanding (eg headlights etc). The bus really is in mint condition apart from the body which we are fixing, sanding and painting.
We also need more crew members, especially drivers with HT licenses who want to take a few days, weeks or months out to tour the country spreading the word about marijuana law reform!
You can also help by identifying places and events around the country the bus should visit. It would also help if you could let us know places to park up overnight.
The NORML CannaBus needs your help - please make a donation, or get in contact if you have skills or contacts that could be useful!

Many cannabis law reform supporters are involved and concerned with local issues, particularly those that affect their families. NORML encourages these people to stand for their children's School Trustees Board, and to support existing Trustees to question the STA's stance on Cannabis Law Reform.

As it is the end of the month, the league tables in the 2004 NORML Newshawk and letter writing competition have been updated. It's a close competition so far, with only a handful of articles submitted, so it would be easy for a new Newshawk to take the lead! The current Newshawk standings are led by NORML NZ on 9 with last year's double winner Duncan Eddy close behind on 8. No published letters have been submitted to the MAP NZ database so far. Many congratulations to new Tauranga NORML co-ordinator Duncan Eddy who has won both the NORML 2003 Newshawk and letter writing competitions. Duncan has also set new records for the most news clippings and published letters in a year - he submitted 191 news stories to the MAP NZ database, ahead of NORML NZ on 129, NORML webmaster Dr Stuey with 57 and Ed Locks on 21. The previous record was Ken Russell with 95 articles in 2001.
And he won the letter writers competition with 11 ahead of Jason Baker-Sherman and Dave Green on 2. The previous record was held by Stephen McIntyre with 10 letters published in 2001. View the final standings from 2003 and tables from previous years.
